2014: Juniors Debut at Southeast Regionals

Sunday May 11, 2014 (Sarasota, FL) – Nashville rowers traveled to Sarasota, FL, on Thursday May 8th, to participate in the USRowing Southeast District Championship Regatta. Nashville brought boats in the following events: Men’s Youth Varsity 4+, Men’s Youth Novice 4+, Women’s Youth Varsity 4+ and Women’s Youth Novice 4+.

Out of the four Nashville entries, the Men’s Youth Novice 4+, Women’s Youth Varsity 4+ and Women’s Youth Novice 4+ progressed from heats to semi final races. The Women’s Youth Varsity 4+ and Women’s Youth Novice 4+ both progressed from semifinals to earn 4th place and Silver (2nd Place) in their finals respectively.

One race commentator had this to say about the Women’s Youth Novice 4+ during their first heat: “Nashville is way out in the lead with beautiful horizontal leg drive – they place their blades in the water with hands that are level, and are just moving out on the field”.

The Women’s Youth Varsity 4+ placed 4th in the final by a very narrow margin (1.67 seconds). This boat came tremendously close to qualifying for Nationals (Top 3) in a varsity level event with four first-year, novice rowers and Coach Eric is excited about their progress over the season.

“The athletes showed great poise and dedication to their goals. It was a great regatta for our new club at a regional championship and we have high hopes for next year. ” Head Coach Eric Gehrke mentioned after the racing had concluded at Nathan Benderson Park.

The Women’s Youth Novice 4+ ended a great weekend of racing to finish 2nd in their final, earning a Silver Medal. “They had three very good races and represented Nashville in a very professional manner,” Coach Kuhlman said after the final.

Southeast Regionals concluded Nashville Juniors Rowing inaugural year. Head Coach Eric Gehrke spoke on this by saying, “This has been a very successful first year and we couldn’t be prouder of our athletes. We’re very excited for future seasons and hope to continue to build on our vision.”
